Editing Life’s Relationships

There are so many relationships in life. Parents ~ Children ~ Siblings ~ Co-Workers ~ Church Family ~ Neighbors ~ Classmates ~ Friends…and the list goes on. How do we maintain a Christlike attitude in all of these relationships among so many imperfect people?
If you’ve ever been part of a relationship, which we all have, you know that whenever you mix various personalities, there will be conflict. What does the Bible tell us is a solution to that – to combat our selfish desires?

Philippians 2:1-5 says So, if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do NOTHING from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves which is yours in Christ Jesus. (emphasis added)

Wow, am I the only one who thinks that you would have to be perfect to fully follow the instruction in these verses?Yet it says that we can have this attitude among ourselves if we allow Christ to work through us. Can you imagine if we all had the attitude that we won’t look out for number one, but we will look out for others first ALL THE TIME? How much easier our relationships would be! How much work for Christ can be done “if ONE person would just act like Jesus!”  John Zimmer, Missionary to Palau, also stated that we each must replace our own personal expectations with personal gratitude. Thankfulness replacing selfishness…

If we each would decide to set aside our own selfish ambitions and truly look out for the best interests of others, we would live out Philippians 1:27 Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ. I know for myself this seems like an insurmountable task, yet God’s Word says that this kind of spirit is mine through my knowledge and relationship with Christ!

I certainly have a long way to go but my prayer is that I will begin to think first of all what is best for the cause of Christ and secondly what will best serve others.
